Coastal Kinships: Indigenous & African Legacies of the Costa Rica Caribbean

This course features four modules chronicling a decolonized history of the Costa Rican Caribbean. The modules are presented as “Encounters”: significant moments in history, resistance, and liberation of Indigenous people and African-descendants within the region of Puerto Limon:

  • Encounter I: The BriBri
  • Encounter II: Shipwrecked: Transatlantic Slavery
  • Encounter III: Jamaican Migrations & Garvey’s Awakening
  • Encounter IV: Garvey’s Return and the Emergence of the Black Star Line

With the use of readings, films, short lectures, and discussions, scholars will discuss the roots of Indigenous and African presence with contemporary issues of kinship. Scholars should come away with a deeper understanding of coastal kinships and solidarity as a means to resistance colonizing projects.
